Tonight at 7PM EST on twitch.tv/idoherty451, I’m starting my story/music analysis playthrough of Silent Hill 4: The Room, the last entry in the series made by the original Team Silent. SH4 picks up on the threads left in Silent Hill 2 about Walter Sullivan, a man who murdered a pair of twins and claimed, “The Red Devil made me do it!”
I like to think of Silent Hill 4 as a psychological thriller/crime drama in the vein of Silence of the Lambs, or any episode of Criminal Minds and similar TV shows–except instead of exploring the mind of a serial killer through the lens of an FBI agent, it’s from the perspective of one of his potential victims: Henry Townshend, an utterly average man who just had the bad luck of moving into a haunted (possessed?) apartment.
SH4’s soundtrack is less thematically-driven than SH2’s, but it also contains some of the most iconic tracks from the series, like the haunting “Room of Angel,” featuring the unparalleled vocal talents of Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (of anime, video game, and Critical Role fame). I’m excited to dig into the lyrics of the vocal tracks and talk about the ways they reflect the story of SH4, as well as their thematic connections back to SH2.
Join me at 7PM tonight to see what makes this game both one of the most divisive and most creative entries in the original series! I’ll be waiting for you.
