On a trip to Ireland back in 2016, I discovered The Gloaming, a contemporary Irish/American supergroup that specializes in creative, often truly haunting interpretations of traditional Irish music, and I instantly fell in love. Coming from an Irish American family, Irish folk music has been a part of my life since my youth, and I like finding creative ways to sprinkle that influence into the music I make (see “The Hawk and the Rabbit” on the Ramshki Alley album). But after listening to The Gloaming’s first two albums, I wanted to try my hand at writing something more directly in the vein of traditional Irish folk music. This was one of the results of that experiment: a mostly-instrumental piano piece called “The Dance.”
